Katia, une enfant de 7 ans, passe comme chaque été ses vacances chez ses grands parents dans un village en Russie. Les jours passent, lentement, entre les jeux avec ses frères, le quotidien à la maison et au potager, l’ennui et la canicule. Mais l’arrivée d’un chien abandonné dans le village vient perturber le quotidien et sort Katia de sa torpeur. Voyant en lui un signe du destin l’aventure de son été, elle décide qu’il sera son meilleur ami, et qu’elle le protègera des voisins qui le voient d’un mauvais oeil quand il commence à voler des poules. Un matin, elle ne le retrouve plus.

Katia, a 7-year-old girl, is spending her summer vacation, as she does every year, at her grandparents’ house in a village in Russia. The days pass slowly, filled with playing with her brothers, daily chores around the house and in the vegetable garden, boredom, and the sweltering heat. But the arrival of a stray dog in the village disrupts the daily routine and snaps Katia out of her lethargy. Seeing him as a sign of destiny and the adventure of her summer, she decides he will be her best friend, and that she will protect him from the neighbors who look upon him with suspicion when he starts stealing chickens. One morning, she can’t find him anymore.
